SUPERHEROES

Everybody loves superheroes.  Maybe it’s because we’re inspired by stories of everyday people moved to action for something they believe in. Maybe it’s a thread woven into the very fabric of every human being that longs for a rescuer that saves us from injustice and suffering.

The Bible has its share of “super-heroes:” the faithful — the ones who show us through their actions that faith isn’t static — it’s life in action.
We’re taking a look at some heroes of faith to learn how to become people of action in our own lives.

In the kick-off week to our series on Superheroes, Curt takes a look at one of the darker superheroes in the comic book universe: Batman. With all the intellect, money, and gadgets that Bruce Wayne uses to embody the Batman, there’s one stark truth about his character: he fights out of revenge, his life is shrouded in guilt, and he’ll never be able to save himself. We live just like that from time to time, don’t we? Take a listen as Curt leads us through the connections between Batman’s life and our lives and the spiritual implications we face when we live in that kind of darkness.

We’ve all heard it. It’s like one of the superhero mantras. “Fighting for Truth, Freedom, and Justice.” In the second week of our Superhero series, guest teacfher and Crosspoint Volunteer, Julie Buchtenkirch looks at one of the most recognized female superheroes: Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s mythic back story and the abilities of her Greek-god-powered golden lasso show how she’s one of the only heroes/heroines that embodies Truth to her core. Listen as Julie leads us in the self exploration of telling the truth to ourselves and the freedom that comes from the truth.

Transformation is a pretty common theme with superheroes. Clark Kent ducking into a phone booth to transform into Superman,  Diana Prince doing that spinning thing to become Wonder Woman,  and of course Bruce Wayne sliding down a fire poel hidden behind a bookshelf and being Batman by the time he hits the bottom. Transformation is just part of the job. But true transformation goes beyond a costume change. This week Governance Board Member and State Pastor Doug Talley talks about his favorite childhood superhero and the transformation that occurred in Thor to become the hero he was always meant to be. Listen as Doug explains that transformation is something that’s important for our lives as well, to become the people that GOD created us to be.

“With great power comes great responsibility.” It’s a lesson that Peter Parker had to learn the hard way once he was graced with superhuman Spidey powers. For Peter it took the lose of his uncle/father figure/mentor to realize that he needed to accept the great responsibility given to him through a strange scientific accident. For us… we were created to have great power and accepting that great responsibility can sometimes be daunting. But, GOD calls us up and out to be obedient. In this week’s teaching, listen as lead pastor Curt Walters explores the correlation between Peter Parker, another Peter from the Bible, and our lives today and explores the truth in the connection between power and responsibility.
